The Role of CBD

CBD, or Cannabidiol, is the most abundant phytocannabinoid (a chemical compound found in plants) found within cannabis plants such as industrial hemp and marijuana.

CBD is just one of 66 identified cannabinoids found in both hemp and marijuana and science is proving that supplementing with CBD may help with reducing the symptoms that are accompanied by Premenstrual Syndrome, such as painful cramps, fatigue, and feelings of stress and anxiety.

CBD accomplishes this by working on specific receptors that can be found throughout the endocannabinoid system, such as CB1, where it both, directly and indirectly, works on the cognitive functions and pain sensation, and CB2 receptors, where it can have an effect on the immune system and inflammation.

Thanks to the Federal Farm Bill of 2018, we can now consume CBD and reap it's therapeutic benefits as long as the THC content is below .3% per serving.

What Are The Benefits Of CBD For PMS?

  • Pain Relief

CBD inhibits FAAH, leading to higher levels of anandamide. Anandamide is an endocannabinoid, a cannabinoid that is made in the body, that can be received by CB1 receptors. When this occurs, the endocannabinoid system sens a signal to the brain that it must lower the sensation of pain.

  • Reduces Inflammation

CBD inhibits COX enzymes the same way NSAIDs would. COX enzymes are responsible for the production of prostaglandins, which causes inflammation. Reducing the level of prostaglandins in the body helps with reducing PMS symptoms like painful abdominal cramps and inflammation.

  • Reduces feelings of anxiety and stress

CBD may help with reducing the feeling of anxiety and stress by acting on three different receptors - cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1), serotonin receptor (5HT1A) and transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1).

How Does Premenstrual Syndrome Occur?

Throughout our reproductive life, the lining of our uterus thickens monthly with estrogen and progesterone in order to nourish a fetus. When fertilization does not occur, the lining of the wall, known as the endometrium, must shed - this is the process known as Menstruation.

Hormonelike substances (Prostaglandins) are responsible for triggering the process of shedding of the uterine lining every month. They cause muscle contractions and cramps mimicking the labor. Furthermore, decreased levels of progesterone, and increased levels of estrogen and prolactin are also responsible for PMS symptoms and menstrual irregularities.

How Does CBD Work?

Remember those days in science class that we learned about the skeletal system and how it facilitates movement and protects our organs? Wouldn't it have been great to be introduced to the system within our bodies that reduce the sensation of pain and anxiety?

The Endocannabinoid System(ECS) does just that!

The endocannabinoid system is responsible for taking on endocannabinoids, a cannabinoid that is made within the body, such as anandamide (AEA). Anandamide can be received by a receptor located spinal nerves known as CB1. When an endocannabinoid is received, a signal communicated to the ECS that it needs to relieve pain. However, an enzyme, or molecule that helps to break other molecules down, known as fatty acid amide hydrolase breaks down anandamide, leading to the pain reduction that we crave.

CBD's best-known function and benefit towards health is the inhibition of FAAH in order to reduce the sensation of pain.

What science shows

Hemp doesn’t induce euphoria or addiction and its anxiolytic and anti-inflammatory properties makes it an ideal supplement for menstrual cramps and inflammation.-Another study focusing on anti-inflammatory and antihyperalgesic (inhibits hyper sensitivity to pain) showed that cannabidiol is an effective agent to treat inflammation and painful cramps during menstruation.

Common Myth Busted:

CBD Does Not Cause One To Get High

This statement is completely true. CBD does not make a consumer high as THC would. However, even though finished products must comply with the .3% THC content as outlined in the Federal Farm Bill of 2018, consuming more than the daily serving prescribed or taking poorly made supplements can lead to the feeling high - especially since CBD and THC are synergistic on CB1 and CB2 receptors.
