Profem Probiotic for Vaginal Health

Dupont Danisco® has a proven track record of producing world class probiotics. It was a no-brainer that we wanted to use their Profem® combo of HN001 and LA-14® when we learned that it has a double-blind placebo control clinical trial on 40 women.

Marketers love to share that their product has a higher CFU per capsule, but did you know that the CFU doesn’t matter?

What matters most is the effective dosage each strain needs to produce an intended effect. Make sure to buy products with probiotic strains that have clinical studies!

The Role of Lactobacillus Probiotics

In the past few years, we’ve discovered that when probiotics are scarce in the gut, it can lead to IBS, inflammation, and less overall wellbeing.

Just like your digestive tract, the Vagina is filled with beneficial bacteria and other microorganisms that play a critical role in your feminine wellbeing. Science is beginning to shine a light on the importance of Vaginal Probiotics as well.

Lactobacillus is a lactic acid-producing probiotic that inhibits the pathogens to create toxins, displaces them from key nutrient sites, and maintains a conducive environment for friendly bacterial growth.

Benefits of Vaginal Probiotics - Lactobacillus Acidophilus & Lactobacillus Rhamnosus

  • Protect Against Bacterial Vaginosis, Yeast Infections and Trichomoniasis

Probiotics primarily produce Lactic Acid as a natural defense against the pathogens that cause BV, Yeast Infections and Trichomoniasis. It is with an increase in the intake of probiotics that they can inhibit the production of bacterial toxins, displace pathogens from the epithelium—the nutrient site for beneficial bacteria—and compete for the glucose needed to create lactic acid.

  • Balance pH and Optimize Vaginal Flora

Probiotics such as those found in Profem® have shown in well-designed human clinical studies to have a beneficial effect on main cellular effectors of natural immunity including epithelial cells, phagocytic cells (monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils), and natural killer cells (NK cells), leading to an enhancement in important cellular immune function.

  • Regulate Immune System and Support Feminine Health

Lactic Acid production is the most important function of lactobacillus species probiotics. It is produced when beneficial bacteria consume the glucose that is found in the epithelium—vaginal mucous—and is the single most important metabolic end product that maintains vaginal pH while optimizing vaginal wellness.

How Bacterial Vaginosis Occurs

Bacterial Vaginosis is the most common vaginal infection in women of childbearing age and is recognized by the reduction of good bacteria such as lactobacillus and the overgrowth of bad bacteria such as Gardnerella vaginalis, Mycoplasma hominis, Prevotella species, and other pathogenic anaerobic bacteria

  1. Due to lifestyle choices and health habits, the number of lactobacillus begins to decrease in the Vaginal Flora, leading to less production of lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide and bacteriocins– the natural defenses our bodies use to ward off the pathogens that cause vaginal infections such as Gardnerella vaginalis or Prevotella.
  2. As the number of good bacteria decreases and natural defenses are no longer produced, pH begins to rise, creating an alkalized environment that good bacteria cannot reproduce in, and bad bacteria thrive in.
  3. Less good bacteria, higher pH, and more bad bacteria can lead to bacterial vaginosis and their side effects like discharge, unusual odors, discomfort, and itching.

How Lactobacillus Probiotics Work

There are more than 50 different species of micro-organisms that make up the Vaginal Flora. The most important and most abundant is known as lactobacillus.

Lactobacillus plays a critical role in maintaining the health of the Vaginal Flora by producing lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide in order to maintain the vaginal pH around 4.5 or less. This, in turn, hampers the growth of pathogenic bacteria and Candida albicans, ensuring that common bacterial infections, like BV, do not occur.

What science shows

In a recent double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 40 healthy women in Italy, Profem® was demonstrated to be well tolerated and lead to better probiotic colonization of the vagina in nearly all subjects receiving the probiotic complex compared to those who did not. This leads to an increase in beneficial bacteria in the vagina.

What Does This Mean For You?
  1. More Lactic Acid Producing Probiotics in the Vaginal Flora
  2. More pathogen displacement in the Vaginal Epithelium
  3. Less pathogen toxins being produced in your vagina!

Why We Chose Profem®

Profem® Probiotics is the combination of two effective lactobacillus strains, HN001 (Rhamnosus) and LA-14® (Acidophilus), that have been proven to meet the four basic requirements that define a probiotic by the World Health Organization (WHO).

First, The Probiotic Must Be Safe For Ingestion.

Lactic acid bacteria, such as Lactobacilli, have long been considered safe and suitable for human consumption since it has been commonly consumed in fermented milk and other food products for decades.

They are listed in the Inventory of Microorganisms With Documented History of Use in Human Food and both species are included in the Qualified Presumption of Safety list of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). There are several published studies have addressed their safety.

Second, It Must Reach The Vaginal Flora

According to the generally accepted definition of a probiotic, the probiotic microorganism should be able to survive the GI Tract passage and colonize the epithelium. This ensures that the probiotic does not degrade due to the biles and acids in the body.

In vitro studies (studies in the body) have shown that both L. Rhamnosus HN001 and L. acidophilus La-14® are very resistant to low pH conditions and survives the presence of bile at concentrations present in the duodenum.

  • 3

Third, The Probiotic Must Have Proven Net Benefits For The Host (You)

    • Production of Natural Defenses Lactic acid is the most important metabolic end-product of fermentation processes by lactic acid bacteria (lactobacillus) and other microorganisms whose purpose is to create such a byproduct.
    • Adhesion to Human Epithelial Cells Both Acidophilus LA-14 and Rhamnosus have demonstrated excellent adhesion to human epithelial cell lines (HT-29) applied in vitro studies compared with a positive (recognized probiotic Lactobacillus strain) and negative control (non-probiotic L. bulgaricus) which may prolong the time a probiotic can reside in the body. . Because they have strong adhesion to the Epithelium, which is the nutrient powerhouse for microorganisms, probiotics compete for nutrients, displace pathogens from the epithelium, and inhibit the production of bacterial toxins which are all highly important to the therapeutic modulation of the vaginal flora.

Last, The Probiotic Must Survive In The Final Consumer Product Format.

The benefits of probiotics are only reaped when the finished product is properly prepared for consumption. At Happy V, we produce our products in our in-house, cGMP facility that ensures maximum quality control so you get the same high-quality product every time.

Common Myth Busted:

The More CFU’s The Better

As more and more probiotic products begin to flood the market, marketers are trying to differentiate by touting more CFU’s per capsule, making the assumption that more probiotics mean more effectiveness. But this is just untrue.

  • Consider the Cubric Zirconia versus a real Diamond. If you weigh the stones of the same size, the Cubric Zirconia will be nearly twice as heavy as a real Diamond, but no one would be confused as to which Is more valuable per gram.
  • So do Probiotics and other supplements work the same way, just because something may have more CFU, doesn’t mean it is as valuable, or works better than something that has less.
  • In a world where better packaging is being confused with more effectiveness, always refer to the ingredient label and the clinical studies.
