Chasteberry, or chaste tree, is a shrub with beautiful violet flowers and blackish-red berries that have been used for PMS and related problems for nearly 2000 years! Our Ancient ancestors knew that what science proves now: the nutrients within this berry may help relieve the symptoms accompanied by premenstrual cramps!
Chasteberry has a broad range of active ingredients that are used for a variety of reasons.
Two of the active polyphenols in chasteberry, Casticin and Agnuside, may stimulate the inhibition of FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) and the production of LH (luteinizing hormone). This in turn leads to the increased release of progesterone and decreased estrogen levels.
This is important because estrogen is linked with PMS symptoms like painful cramps in the lower abdomen and inflammation – making it ideal for Happy V® Relief!
Menstrual cramps or primary dysmenorrhea are painful cramps of uterine origin. Did you know that one-half of all menstruating women suffer from menstrual cramps in the initial 3 days of their period?
Every month when the egg formed inside a woman’s body doesn’t get any sperm to fertilize it, the uterus sheds its lining resulting in periods.
Prostaglandins are chemical substances that form the uterine lining and are responsible for triggering the process of shedding of the uterine lining. They cause muscle contractions and cramps mimicking labor. Prostaglandins also make endometrium ischemic i.e. prevents the blood flow to the endometrium resulting in lack of oxygen there and hence more pain.
Furthermore, decreased levels of progesterone, and increased levels of estrogen and prolactin are also responsible for PMS symptoms and menstrual irregularities.
Chasteberry may directly or indirectly stimulate the production of progesterone and hence relieves estrogen-related PMS symptoms such as painful cramps, abdominal discomfort and more. Chasteberry has flavonols such as Casticin which reduces inflammation.

In a study showing the comparison between chasteberry vitex with vitamin B6 and fluoxetine, the combinations have been found to be effective in treating Premenstrual Syndome cramping. Studies suggest that taking vitamin B6 can help in reducing PMS symptoms such as back pain, water retention, anxiety and premenstrual depression too. B6 was also found to be effective in treating PMS related acne. Therefore, combining the herbal remedy (chasteberry) with Vitamin B6 supplement can greatly reduce the severity of PMS and PMDD)

Want to really dive deep into what studies are showing about Chasteberry? We’ve attached our supplier whitepapers, so you can see the facts!
In medieval times, the chaste berry was widely used to suppress libido or sexual desire in both men and women. These berries were thought to promote chastity i.e. refraining from extramarital sexual affairs or sex in general. This myth was so popular that even monks used it to stay away from any sexual desire and stick to their celibacy vows. However, research has proven this to be just a myth.
